Once upon a Winter time in Old Europe, the town elders decide to build a wondrous clock to celebrate the cycle of seasons. After many years of mathematical calculations, careful engineering and mechanical construction the extraordinary clock is completed and the town throws a grand Winter Solstice party to coincide with the annual Mummers competition. They know the Empress and her entourage will attend and the clock will astound them.As the royal party enjoys the rich offerings of traditional songs and dance from Central and Southeastern Europe (Romania, Bulgaria, Croatia, Russia, Georgia, Macedonia, Serbia, and Poland), the Empress makes a decision that threatens the well-being of everyone in the village. And that’s not the only challenge on this winter solstice day. The mummers who came to compete don’t much get along…. but it's Christmas! They have to!
Please join us for our nineteenth Portland Christmas Revels to see how devastating royal choices and fraught regional rivalries work out in the end. Along the way we promise you’ll receive the blessings of the season, and enjoy gorgeous costumes and set, fabulous music from our auditioned chorus of 65 singers ages six to 70+. There’ll be a generous dash of broad humor and silly business, and wonderful instrumental music from the Portland Brass Quintet and other special guests. Special guests include Eric Stern of The Vagabond Opera as the village Mayor, Ithica Tell as the Empress, and Revels favorite fool Burl Ross as Hodiny, the clockmaker’s klutzy assistant.
